Edward Picardi

Edward Picardi, MD, FACS, DABS, has accumulated over three decades of experience as a general surgeon, with a career that spans across various states and countries. Renowned for his expertise in trauma surgery and advanced laparoscopic procedures, he is also deeply involved in volunteer medical missions. Dr. Picardi is respected for his unwavering commitment to patient care, advocacy for life causes, and dedication to both his local community and underserved populations internationally. Born on February 15, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his interest in medicine began early. This led him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, specializing in Biomedical Engineering, with honors in 1979. His passion for health sciences propelled him to attain his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Hahnemann University in 1983. Post-medical school, he embarked on his surgical training at Wright-State University while also stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He completed his residency there from June 1983 to June 1989, gaining a diverse range of surgical skills. In July 1989, he was designated as a staff surgeon at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, serving as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. In 1992, after concluding his military service, he shifted to civilian practice and opened a private practice in Rapid City, South Dakota. Over the next twenty years, he established himself as a leading general surgeon in the region. His exemplary service earned him the Outstanding Surgeon Award from the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 2001. He also served as the President of this chapter from 1999 to 2000. He played a pivotal role in the Governor's Task Force on Medicaid and Trauma, significantly impacting the development of the statewide trauma system. In 2018, Dr. Picardi moved to Steubenville, Ohio, joining Trinity Health Systems, part of the Catholic Health Initiative. He has excelled in this setting, introducing his expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotics. He has performed over 250 robotic surgeries, including complex procedures such as cholecystectomies, hernias, and bowel resections. He also serves as a trauma consultant for the regional EMS, contributing to the ongoing enhancement of trauma care in the area. Apart from his clinical practice, Dr. Edward Picardi has also made notable contributions to medical research, with projects like investigating the effects of streptokinase on mesenteric venous thrombosis and pioneering techniques in laparoscopic surgery. His advocacy for pro-life causes has been a defining aspect of his career, leading to significant political involvement and recognition, including the Physician of the Year Award from the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2005. His commitment extends beyond U.S. borders through volunteer medical missions in Western Africa, undertaken with his wife. In addition to his professional obligations, he cherishes the outdoors, frequently hiking and camping with his wife, which provides them with valuable moments of relaxation and connection with nature.
